How Condition Impacts Price

In the world of vintage, condition is everything—but it's not always about being perfect. "Character" can sometimes be just as valuable as "Mint" condition.

The Standard Grading Scale

1. Deadstock / NOS (New Old Stock)

These are shirts that were never sold or worn. They often still have original price tags. These fetch the highest premiums.

2. Mint / Excellent

Worn but showing very little sign of use. No holes, no stains, and the print is crisp.

3. Good / Very Good

The "sweet spot" for many collectors. General fading and soft fabric, but structurally sound.

4. Distressed / Thrashed

This is a popular sub-culture in vintage. Shirts with holes, stains, and frayed collars. While technically "poor" condition, for certain bands (like Nirvana or Soundgarden), this can actually be more desirable than mint.

Critical Issues to Look For

  • **Dry Rot**: If the fabric rips like paper with a light tug, it's garbage.
  • **Pit Stains**: Hard to remove and generally decrease value.
  • **Cracked Prints**: Normal for age but can be excessive.
